There has been much publicity about the 'Year 2000 (Y2K) Problem'. For those of you not
aware, this is when all automated machines are supposed to cease operation because they
were not designed to operate past December 31, 1999. I want to let you know where The
Ideal Supply Co. stands on this situation.
Three years ago, we were in the market for new computer hardware and software for our
normal business operations. Being from an IS background, I had on my list of requirements
that any hardware or software we purchased was Y2K compliant. When we chose Eclipse for
our application software, we were promised that the system was designed to accept
transactions into the 2000's. However, it did not stop there.
Shortly after we went live on the system, I post-dated the system to 2001 and proceeded to
test the applications for correctness using both live and fictitious data. I found that we
were compliant until 2034! In addition, all of our other server and client systems are Y2K
compliant. By doing our homework early and completely replacing our legacy systems, Y2K is
not an internal concern. Coupled with the fact that we do not supply date-sensitive
products, our customers can rest knowing that at 12:01 on 1 January 2000, their pipe,
valves and fittings will still operate.
While our problems have been minimized, we understand that this is not the case with
some of you - our customers and vendors. I strongly urge all of you to assess your
currently installed systems or keep this issue in mind should you be in the market for
software or hardware. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss your concerns.
